Why We Create Art | A Conversation While Painting | Kirsteen Lyons-Benson

In this video, I paint in the studio and talk about one of my favourite questions: why does art exist in civilisation at all? Why do humans, across every culture and every moment in history, make things? Why paint, why carve, why write, why sing?

Art is not just decoration. It is communication, memory, identity, and sometimes a lifeline. It reflects the bright face of the present and future to those who may not see it so clearly. It has done this since the first marks on cave walls, and it continues now — in your hands, in mine.

Come with me while I work on a mixed media piece, and let’s speak about creativity, survival, beauty, and the deep human need to express what cannot be said in words alone.

If this speaks to you, leave a comment. I’d love to know what art means to you.
