Why We Create Art | A Conversation While Painting | Kirsteen Lyons-Benson

Image
In this video, I paint in the studio and talk about one of my favourite questions: why does art exist in civilisation at all? Why do humans, across every culture and every moment in history, make things? Why paint, why carve, why write, why sing? Art is not just decoration. It is communication, memory, identity, and sometimes a lifeline. It reflects the bright face of the present and future to those who may not see it so clearly. It has done this since the first marks on cave walls, and it continues now — in your hands, in mine. Come with me while I work on a mixed media piece, and let’s speak about creativity, survival, beauty, and the deep human need to express what cannot be said in words alone. If this speaks to you, leave a comment. I’d love to know what art means to you. Art and the trap door in the floor - self doubt

Art and the trap door in the floor - self doubt By Kirsteen Lyons-Benson BA (Hons) Artist (not a critic nor an academic, an artist) I am an artist, it is who I am in a very simple literal sense like “I am a spade” or “I am a hammer” by this I mean - I just am, it did not come from my genetics, or my qualifications, or my fairy godmother, and I do not require anyone else to make it so. But unlike a spade I am because I choose to be. Being an artist to me means several things, I am outside the class system, kings and prostitutes have been the subjects of artists for as long as there has been either. I am outside society and it’s insular groups as much as I can be, I should be friends with many groups, welcome many places but belong very carefully - because I should alway strive for perspective, this is because an artist’s function is to comment on civilisation and imagine new futures for us all. This is also why I read and travel as diversely as I can. Perspective, the search for n...

Some things I have learned about travel.

Image
Some things I have learned about travel. Plenty of people have traveled more than me, much more, but I thought a few of my friends might like my travel tips anyway. If you add up my travel in miles it’s over 4 times round the Earth, if you add it up in time it’s over a year full time, if you add it up in countries it’s 22, many several times to different parts. I’ve always loved going new places and learning from it, I love everything about it: packing, arriving, learning how things work, trying new things, getting my preconceived ideas, I didn’t even realise I had, blown apart! I’ve couch-surfed, stayed in plush hotels, stayed in literal castles, vans, beach huts, tents, road trips, gone by train, flown, ferry boat and walked. So the tips are: Even in hot places never underestimate how much colder it will be at sea or on the coast. Packable macs and squash-able down jackets are your friends. Get lots of small water bottles and make everyone carry their own even if you carry all ...

Kirsteen’s Aesthetic Art and Travel My goal with this channel: I want to help as many people as possible who have quit art or wish they did more art, go back to creating and feeling joy. I also wish to share my knowledge and create for myself. It is my skill share project to whoever wishes to know it. What are the subjects?: I plan to make tutorials on all sorts of visual art; painting, drawing, calligraphy, photography, sculpture, ceramics, metal clay, mixed media and more. I plan to explain techniques and vocabulary such as how to use colour or perspective. I plan to talk about the nature of art and how to keep creating. I plan to show my travel photography and create art from that. I plan to do outdoor art, recycled and up-cycled art, gallery and studio tours, city tours of the art and anything else I can think of to share my knowledge with anyone who cares to learn from me. Tutoring: Need more help with art, I do tutor art online and in person: Small groups £10 each (no more than 7...
